In the summer of 2024, a year marked by wars, artificial intelligence, and relentless bad news, something else happened: weed became legal in Germany. In a quieter revolution than expected and without any fanfare, countless people were no longer considered criminals breaking the law. For the first time, what they had done with paranoia for years was now accepted.

During the long summer days in Berlin, walking through the city streets, one could notice that new varieties of plants adorned the balconies of buildings. Green and bushy, the familiar and mysterious plants blended in with the rest of the urban flora, photosynthesizing alongside them.

Everything stayed normal; the restrained legalization was not accompanied by the opening of stores or dedicated cafes that reshaped the landscape. In Berlin, the change wasn’t too noticeable—perhaps just a little greener, occasionally more fragrant.

Weed no longer needed to hide. This photography series showcases marijuana, often perceived in culture as cheap trash, from a different, less stigmatized, and more elegant perspective.

The plants that served as models for these photos were a small, welcome distraction in 2024.
